I have no intention to offend anyone and I think I speak for everyone when I say - our way of dressing reflects who we are as a person. When we step out of our homes, we are immediately giving strangers small glimpses of who we are, by the way we dress. And as society progressed, we are given ideas and examples of the right types of clothes to wear for different events. Church however, never really had a clear dress code. All we knew and understood was, "as long as it's appropriate, it's okay".
So what exactly is appropriate? And how do we know if something is appropriate enough for church?
In the church that I go to, everyone is pretty much given the freedom to wear whatever they're comfortable in, to church. And as one of our Pastors said, "At least wear some clothes..."
But in society today where everything is accepted, we often forget how high and important the God we're serving is.
Here's the point: We serve an all powerful God who deserves all the praises and honor the entire world could possibly ever give, He deserves everything! Even then, why is it that we are more focused on that beach outing we're going to after church that we actually are already wearing beach shorts to church? Why do we wear that spare overused shirt in the laundry to a church service? Why don't we at least make an effort to prepare a decent church attire a day before? It's sad to think that we make an effort to dress smartly and beautifully for office or school every day, but on that one day that's reserved for a little God-time, we barely make an effort to look decent. How about instead of trying to make a good impression for a meeting or following the latest clothing trends, we actually try to dress appropriately in our Creator's presence?
Okay wait. I know what you're thinking. Yes, there's a verse that tells us about God not looking at our outward appearances:
1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
"... man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
So let's put it this way, if you were wearing a certain clothing item at church this Sunday (or Friday, for my Dubai peeps) , and God were to look directly at your heart, what would He see? Would He see how much you want to genuinely worship Him even with the way you dress, or would he instead see how you think of others' opinions on your cute dress and new shoes?
At the end of the day, it all depends on why we wear what we wear. Whether it be formal, casual, dressy, simple, stripes, polka dots, you name it.
So to answer the questions I asked myself earlier (Ya, I ask myself questions, I'm weird.) ,anything is acceptable to wear to church, as long as it doesn't shift our focus away from our desire to worship and serve the only one who deserves it - God.
P.S. This post is not a bunch of rules about what and what not to wear to church. I am no perfect person and I'm not judging anybody, I'm simply expressing my views on this topic. Thank you for reading!
